DIGITAL NOMADS ON BICYCLES
FROM THE SILK ROAD CARAVANS TO DIGITAL NOMADITY
PREWORD
We witness that the historical Silk Road created great wealth for the regions it passed through with the hand-made products they loaded onto camels and the caravans that traveled the long distance from China to Europe at walking speed. Today, we witness that we are becoming poorer despite the fast communication brought by the digital age and the transportation of tons of products produced in factories in a short time by trucks, ships and planes. This book, which we named From the Silk Road Caravans to Digital Nomadism, contains ideas written according to the conditions of 2024 Turkey. The author writes it knowing that these ideas may change according to other regions and conditions, may develop in the future and may even be criticized by many. The author has worked in the media sector for a long time in areas such as TV, documentary, advertisement, clip, cartoon and news, and during the years he spent in the media sector, he has witnessed how information can be manipulated. However, when he faced this reality, instead of quitting his job, he chose to reshape it in line with his own values. He traveled around Turkey with his camera and bicycle. During this adventure that lasted approximately 15 years, he cycled the dusty roads of the Silk Road and ancient cities, discovering a new story with each pedaling. During these journeys, he found the opportunity to start his own business thanks to the opportunities offered by the internet. The images he shot and the research he conducted transformed him into an entrepreneur who organizes bicycle tours. Now, he wants to bring together the knowledge and experience he gained as a digital nomad to show that a lifestyle that transcends borders is possible. These articles contain both a summary of his personal journey and in-depth information about digital nomadism. I hope these lines will encourage you to discover your own adventure.
You Can't Buy Time
In traditional business models, we turn our time into money, but it is not possible to buy time with this money. That's why we need to see time as the most valuable asset and not use it in the most productive and meaningful way. When the retirement date comes, the opportunities offered by the financial means you have may lose their importance and you may lose your joy of life. Over time, health problems begin, life conditions become difficult and you may start to question the meaning of life. For this reason, instead of thinking of the work you do only focused on money, it is important to use your time more valuablely and take up hobbies, spend time with your loved ones and travel.
So, are money collectors and property hoarders so happy? Believe me, they try every way to suppress their agonizing pain. But the price of high satisfaction is nothing more than the fact that what you have reached no longer has any meaning. In digital nomadism, we promise you not to be satisfied, but to be lacking. Lose your belongings, your dreams, your future plans, the investment opportunities you missed, leave the poor crowds chasing this nonsense. Declare your digital nomadism and put a spoke in the wheel of this gear. But maybe before you know it, all your energy will be gone and you will have turned into a zombie thinking about your retirement bonus. One of millions of retirees who have lost their purpose…
Reading a lot or traveling a lot?
Traveling life is full of rich experiences and affects your mastery in many areas. Travelers learn by experiencing the natural and historical riches of different cultures and geographies. These experiences provide a deeper and more permanent learning than theoretical storage of geography and history information. By communicating with people living in different places, their ability to understand and compare different cultures and beliefs develops. Travelers discover different cuisines by trying the local dishes in their own region. This makes them good chefs and gourmets. During travel, they have the opportunity to experience many sports such as nature walks, mountain climbing, water sports. This encourages them to have an active lifestyle and a healthy mass.
Those who travel in difficult conditions develop their survival skills, understand nature better, and this makes them meaningful individuals. While traveling, they also have the opportunity to engage in institutional activities such as literature, music, and painting. They discover the art and cultural heritage of different cultures. As a result, their lives are full of rich experiences and these experiences make them well-rounded individuals. Traveling allows people to understand the world better and encourages a healthy, stress-free, and happy lifestyle.
Slavery Starts at School
The traditional education system can prevent those who are growing up from discovering their creativity, critical thinking details, and real experiences. The traditional education system often adopts a rote-learning approach and encourages them to focus only on memorizing information. This can prevent them from developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The traditional education system is constantly evaluated with exams and grades, which can cause great stress and anxiety disorders. Standardized curricula and lesson plans can prevent the discovery of different interests. Alternatively, opportunities should be provided in creative areas such as art, music, and drama, and they should be allowed to explore their interests and energies.
As in Aristotle's school, they should be provided with experience-based, basic experiences and practical applications. This method makes the learning process effective and meaningful, while helping them develop real-life skills.
Knowledge Without Experience Is Garbage
The digital nomad lifestyle is based on consistent experiences. Instead of proving themselves to someone, those who adopt this lifestyle focus on enriching their experiences and simplifying their lifestyles. Digital nomads use their experiences to acquire practical knowledge and skills. While traveling, they have the opportunity to get to know different cultures, discover new places, and do various activities for personal development. Digital nomads focus on discovering the meaning of life throughout their experiences. They prefer to live a life full of different experiences and adventures than the boundaries of an ordinary life.
Minimalism
Minimalism means lightness and freedom for digital nomads. Getting rid of excess possessions and adopting a simple lifestyle provides mobility and flexibility during travels. Minimalism provides mental relaxation by getting rid of unnecessary information and items. Digital nomads aim to live a more focused and happy life by adopting a simple lifestyle. Therefore, in order to learn something new, first forgetting what you know and making the transition to a minimal life defines the digital nomad lifestyle.

Spice Road
The Spice Road and the Silk Road have been important trade routes throughout history where trade and cultural exchange took place between the East and the West. Both have contributed to the development of trade and cultural interaction by connecting different geographical regions, but they carry different purposes and products.
The Silk Road is known as a trade route extending from East Asia to the Middle East and Europe. Although it is especially known for the silk trade, different products and cultural interactions were also carried along the Silk Road. Merchants trading on this road carried products such as silk, ceramics and spices from China to the West.
The Spice Road is a trade network extending from India and China to the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Europe. It got its name from the spices carried from Asia to Europe. The Spice Road led to the discovery of spices by western countries. Especially in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, spices became a symbol of luxury and prestige in Europe and contributed to the development of trade.
The products carried along these roads led to an increase in cultural interactions as well as trade. Spices have played an important role in the development of different cuisines. The addition of spices, especially to European cuisine, has contributed to the enrichment and diversification of food culture.
Food, Taste, Satisfaction
Food is one of the basic needs of people and is an activity necessary for survival. However, today's eating habits have gone beyond just a physical need. It has become common to see that even holiday plans are made based on food. A food-focused lifestyle leads to health and overconsumption problems. The taste experience is largely a mental process. The sense of taste is perceived through the taste buds on our tongue, but these perceptions are processed and interpreted in our brain. Therefore, when we taste a food or drink, that taste experience is determined not only by our tongue, but also by the processing and interpretation processes of our brain. Before tasting a food or drink, we usually have some information or expectations about that product. For example, we may have heard that a coffee shop makes good coffee or that a restaurant offers delicious food. This information can cause our brain to influence our taste experience and make us evaluate that food or drink more positively. Our taste experience is also affected by having tasted similar flavors before. For example, when we try a coffee, we may remember coffees we have had before or other experiences with coffee, which can affect our taste experience. However, everyone's taste preferences and experiences are different. A food or drink that is delicious to one person may not be as impressive to another. Therefore, taste experiences are highly personal and are shaped by mental processes, emotions, and experiences.
Satisfaction is the feeling of fullness and satisfaction after consuming a food or drink. In other words, feeling full after a meal, the feeling of hunger has passed, and the desire to eat has decreased. Satisfaction is a state in which the body has met its nutritional needs and satiety signals are transmitted to the brain, indicating that it is time to stop eating. However, sometimes people may not perceive satiety signals correctly or may not respond correctly. Similarly, fast eating habits can prevent the correct perception of satiety signals because the body does not have enough time to recognize the process of eating and send satiety signals in a timely manner.
It is quite common for the rich to consult dietitians and nutritionists to get advice on eating less. The rich usually have busy and stressful lives. Therefore, they need professional help to stay healthy by eating less with a suitable diet plan. The rich do not hesitate to spend money to achieve their lifestyle goals of eating less. A healthy lifestyle involves much more than just eating. Regular exercise, staying away from stress, adequate sleep, fresh air and healthy relationships are also important. These are more important factors than just focusing on the amount of food.
Advertisements affect us
Advertisements can manipulate consumer behavior by influencing eating habits and taste buds. Advertisements usually emphasize the positive features of a particular product or brand and encourage the consumer to buy that product. Food advertisements are especially based on visual and emotional appeal. Colorful and appetizing images, scenes showing delicious food being prepared, tables full of happy people or family settings, etc. stimulate the viewer's appetite and encourage them to buy the product. Advertisements often use special effects, music and sound effects to compliment the taste of the product.
The Biggest Problem: Property
Property refers to the right of individuals to own property, land, buildings or other assets. However, this concept also has some negative aspects. Buying a house usually requires a long-term investment and process. After becoming a homeowner, expenses such as furniture, white goods and decoration are made to furnish the interior of the house. In addition, the maintenance of the house includes expenses such as daily cleaning, repair and maintenance. In addition to these, there are regular expenses such as taxes, insurance, electricity, water, electricity and internet brought by the homeowner. Therefore, buying a house is only the first step and it is possible to encounter many additional costs and responsibilities later on.
Property widens the gap between the rich and the poor, while the rich own more property, the poor have limited opportunities to own property. Property leads to excessive use of natural resources. Landowners use forest and agricultural lands for construction for profit. Property tends to draw people into their own areas, weakens neighborly relations and can lead to social isolation. Property encourages greed and competition, and people are in a constant race to acquire more property. Owning property also brings with it responsibilities such as maintenance, security and taxes. This creates stress and anxiety in individuals. It is important to adopt a balanced approach and use property not only for personal interests but also for the welfare of society. Building a concrete house on fertile agricultural land can bring many problems from a social perspective. Concreting agricultural land poses a risk to food security, because the population continues to increase while agricultural land decreases.
Communal Living
Throughout history, many ancient civilizations and religions have encouraged social solidarity and cooperation by establishing communal living spaces. In these civilizations, people generally lived together and used resources more efficiently. Common areas such as shared kitchens, water wells and baths allowed people to meet their needs more effectively. Such social structures reduced waste by using resources more balancedly, increased social solidarity and strengthened social ties. In addition, increasing people's sharing in communal living spaces strengthened social welfare and solidarity. Individual lifestyles lead to more consumption and waste. Property ownership leads to ignoring the property rights of others, along with the options to protect their own property. This situation causes social unrest, intolerance and even fights. In addition, excessive reinforcement of property value deepens social inequalities and leads to injustice in accessing available resources.
Socialization
Socialization is the process of interacting with other people in society, meeting new people and strengthening social ties. Socialization activities, meeting with friends, visiting family, participating in community events, and joining clubs and associations, such as uniting various members. These provide opportunities to develop social skills, increase communication opportunities and get to know different cultures. Socialization in city life can be costly. For example, activities such as eating out, going to the cinema, and participating in sports events require a certain budget.
Digital nomads do not need money to socialize. Digital nomads can communicate with people from all over the world through the internet and social media. Digital nomads bring people with common interests together. Digital nomads can meet other travelers through shared spaces. This helps them make both social and business connections. Digital nomads can share their travel experiences through blogs or podcasts. This strengthens social ties and allows them to communicate with other travelers.
The King is Naked
The material assets a person will need are limited. No matter how many houses and cars you have, how many foods you fill your table with, it will only physically take up a certain amount of space and you can eat as much as you can stomach. However, people who have malicious thoughts other than the needs of their physical bodies, ambition, greed and greedy people spread unrest in a very wide area. As the ranks and positions of these people grow, the unrest they give will take up a much larger area, and some even set their eyes on the world. But all of these are only in the dimension of non-material thought, they cannot do anything physically. All the property they acquire will be their bane. People are equal with their physical existence and everyone has the same basic rights.
European settlers encountered native peoples when they arrived in the American continent and tried to destroy them in order to gain more of these lands. Europeans, who have a large continent, still do not stop and haunt all over the world. Many people may think that they dominate the world
Being Right or Being Happy?
One of the things we pursue throughout our lives is usually being right. We spend time, effort, and perhaps even get into conflicts to prove that we are right. However, this constant desire to be right can sometimes distance us from our true happiness. So, is it more important to be right or to be happy?
Being right can often make a person feel powerful and respectful. Proving that you are right can increase your self-esteem and strengthen your reputation in society. Also, knowing that you are right can help you defend yourself and protect your boundaries when you are wronged. However, the desire to be right can sometimes result in arrogance and competitiveness, which can damage your relationships and negatively affect your emotional well-being.
Being happy means living a life filled with inner peace and satisfaction. Happiness usually allows a person to achieve inner balance and emotional wealth. Acceptance of yourself and others, a sense of gratitude, thankfulness, and inner peace are the basic elements of happiness. Being happy can help you build healthy relationships, reduce stress, and have more fulfilling experiences in every aspect of your life.
You don't have to choose between being right or being happy. However, focusing solely on being right can overshadow your happiness and cause problems in your relationships. The important thing is to care about yourself and your emotional needs and choose happiness by letting go of being right when necessary. Instead of proving to others that you are right, focus on making yourself happy and find inner peace. In this way, you can be both right and happy, but you don't have to answer to anyone for your happiness.
Crowds That Fit the System
Most of us dream of having a peaceful and quiet vacation away from the crowds. Unfortunately, many vacation areas can also be overcrowded during the vacation period. People living in metropolitan areas usually prefer to vacation on certain vacation days and during the summer season. However, these preferences are not only based on individual preferences, but also on vacation days and work arrangements determined by the system. The determination of vacation days, especially the concentration of them in certain periods such as weekends and the summer season, causes overcrowding in vacation areas. In other months, holiday regions are usually empty. Digital nomads with flexible business models experience the best times in these holiday regions.
In our daily lives, we are under the influence of many factors determined by the system, such as work arrangements and holidays. However, it is necessary to consider that these arrangements are not only shaped by practical requirements, but also as a result of collective action and fear. So why are Saturday and Sunday determined as a day off? Why do we go to work at 8 am and leave at 7 pm? Can't other work models and time zones be considered?
The Power of Loneliness
Even while living in the chaos of cities with millions, many people feel lonely internally. However, loneliness is not only isolation, it is also one of the greatest sources of power for a person. Loneliness provides inner freedom and the capacity to do business. This inner journey helps a person discover themselves and realize their personal potential.
The sense of freedom that comes with being on your own increases the individual's capacity to make their own decisions and chart their own path. Loneliness allows you to get rid of the influence of external factors and listen to your inner voice, reaching your true self. Loneliness increases the capacity to do business because it allows a person to return to their inner world and focus on themselves.
Knowing How to Be Satisfied
Today's societies tend to constantly want more. However, our ever-increasing desires and expectations can actually distance us from achieving true happiness. Knowing how to be satisfied may be the key to finding true happiness in our lives.
Knowing how to be satisfied involves determining one's needs and refusing to be limited by them and wanting more. Instead of always wanting a bigger house, a more luxurious car or a more expensive vacation, it is important to learn to be happy with our current situation and appreciate the value of what we have. Knowing how to be satisfied allows us to understand that we are sufficient for ourselves and that external factors are not necessary to make us happy.
True happiness is achieved by seeing what we have and the situation we are in as valuable. Constantly wanting more and choosing not to be happy until we reach our goals may never actually lead us to true happiness. True happiness is achieved when we find a sense of inner serenity and peace, and this is only possible by knowing how to be content.
Loss of True Wealth
Often the greatest desire to make money, acquire material possessions, and more

While the caravans brought different cultures together by trading on their long and difficult journeys, they also discovered new trade routes and markets.
Digital nomads continue their lives by working, traveling or working remotely over the internet. In this way, they can interact with different cultures and do business with customers from different geographies.
Silk Road caravans served as a bridge between different cultures and provided information exchange between these cultures. Similarly, digital nomads interact with different cultures through the internet, learn new information, and gain different perspectives.

Responsibility
For digital nomads, freedom is not just a geographical concept; it also means independence in personal and professional life. However, this freedom also requires a high level of responsibility. The uncertainties and challenges that come with such a life should not be ignored. Giving up on conventional assurances such as health insurance, retirement plans, and regular income is an important decision for digital nomads.
Digital nomadism is definitely not an option for everyone. However, with the right planning, discipline, and motivation, it offers unique opportunities for individuals who want to live and work freely. Those who choose this lifestyle can see the world as their office and do their work wherever and whenever they want.
In Conclusion
Although digital nomadism seems like a new concept, it is inspired by past experiences, teachings, and nature. It also knows how to take examples from historical Silk Road caravans and how to use modern technologies. It also researches and learns history, cultures, mythology, religions, and teachings, and learns and uses the internet and artificial intelligence. It neither runs away from isms, religions, or other ideas, nor is it afraid that artificial intelligence will replace humans.
Digital nomadism is not very complicated or difficult. In fact, it is simple, plain, and plain. The main reason why this kind of life and way of thinking seems difficult is that it is very simple. It is difficult for human beings to do simple things. Isn't that so; humans have always complicated living, eating, sheltering, loving, living together...
